Rough Legged Hawk 2

Rough Legged Hawk 2

$2,229.00Price

Rough-legged Hawks begin their long migration from their breeding grounds in the Arctic tundra in mid-September.  By November, many of these mid-size raptors have made their way to the winter wonderland around Jackson Hole, WY and the Teton National Park.  They considered this stopover area to be a winter haven.

Temperatures in the Teton ecosystem can reach -40 degrees during the depths of winter.  These hearty hawks have adapted a few strategies to keep warm during the frozen times.

Rough-legged Hawks get their name from the feathers that cover their legs. which helps keep them warm. To retain more heat, hawks can “fluff” their body feathers thus creating air pockets which offer more insulation.  Often times, these hawks will pull one leg into their body feathers in an effort to retain more heat. This mature hawk was employing all three strategies to help ward off the cold as he hunted by the roadside.
